Yeast infection in immunocompetent patients: fomenting ferment to foil the fermenter.

چکیده
Interest in Candida species as a cause of hospital-associated infection is currently outstripped only by the recent focus on coagulase-negative staphylococci as significant nosocomial pathogens. Once considered little more than saprophytic nuisances, Candida sp. have assumed a progressively important role as hospital-associated pathogens. Coincident with the advent of effective, broad-spectrum antibacterial therapy, Candida sp. have become more commonly isolated from clinical specimens, not only in tertiary referral centers where severely immunocompromised patients are often treated, but also in acute care and community hospitals. In one major municipal hospital Candida sp. are the fifth most common blood culture isolate. In 1984, Candida was the fourth most common blood culture isolate at The Clinical Center of the National Institutes of Health, trailing only S. epidermidis, S. aureus, and E. coli (VJ Gill, personal communication). Clinically significant candidal syndromes such as Candida endophthalmitis, Candida osteomyelitis, Candida meningi t i s , 4 Candida per i ton i t i s , 5 and , most recently, Candida hepatitis have become relatively com-

Optimization of A Fed-Batch Fermenter Producing Bakerâs Yeast Using Simulated Annealing Method
Modeling of fermentation processes is so complicated and uncertain; therefore it is necessary to provide a robust and appropriate dynamic optimization method. In order to obtain the maximum amount of yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae), the bioreactor must be operated under optimal conditions. To determine substrate feeding in a fed-batch bioreactor, a simulated annealing (SA) approach was examine...
متن کاملRapid method for testing raffinose fermentation by yeasts.
The alcoholic fermentation of raffinose by yeasts has considerable taxonomic importance. Certain species do not ferment this trisaccharide at all; others ferment only the fructose part; whereas others ferment both parts (fructose and melibiose). All or some strains of a few species ferment melibiose incompletely. Most older methods for testing raffinose fermentation are based on quantitative de...
متن کاملMycobacterium tuberculosis Dominance over Nontuberculous Mycobacteria Irrespective of Immune Status: An Indian Scenario
Introduction: In HIV-associated tuberculosis cases, identifying nontuberculous Mycobacteria (NTM) from clinical samples has become essential regarding patients’ treatment and prognosis. This study aims to determine the prevalence of different Mycobacteria species from immunocompromised and immunocompetent patients with suspected tuberculosis attending a tertiary care hospital in Kolkata, India....
متن کاملChronic Invasive Fungal Granuloma–A Diagnostic Dilemma in an Immunocompetent Host
Introduction: Invasive fungal sinusitis, though considered to be rare entity, is nowadays frequently encountered, not only in immunocompromised patients but also in immunocompetent patients. The changing prevalence towards immunocompetent hosts is due to the indiscriminate usage of broad spectrum antibiotics, steroids, and immunosuppressive drugs. Diagnosing invasive fungal sinusitis should not...

In all biological systems growth is defined as increase of chemical compounds. Bacteria can achieve to balanced growth if they are growing in a medium, which are completely adapted to it. Clostridium chauvoei, (Clostridium feseri) is an anaerobic, spore forming, motile, and polymorph bacteria, which its size varies from 0.5-1 to 3-8 micron and could be observed as individual bacterium, diplo, a...
